Event Description

Full Description:
Abstract: Satellite communications terminals are often used to achieve broadband data rates outside the traditional ISP environment. Increasingly there is a desire to use these terminals when fitted to a vehicle intended for urgent dispatch or to achieve on-the-move (OTM) satellite communications.

EM Solutions has developed a Ka-band OTM terminal for use at military and commercial frequencies. At these frequencies, a pointing accuracy of < 0.3 degrees is required to maintain the satellite link over off road conditions. This is achieved by using closed-loop monopulse feed to track a satellite's telemetry signal or beacon, supplemented with data from the terminal’s gyroscopes.

EM Solutions will outline the evolution of this OTM terminal from its beginnings on the Cairns Tilt Train to a recent export to Japan as part of their Disaster Recovery program, following the 2011 natural disasters in Fukushima.

Biography: John Login received his B Com, and B.E (Mech, Hons) from the University of Queensland in 1990 and 1994 respectively. John Logan’s role at EM Solutions Pty Ltd is to manage the Satellite Programmes within Australia for the Australian Defence Forces and to assist overseas vendors who purchase EM Solutions Pty Ltd equipment integrate it into their systems.

John Logan has been responsible for the successful completion of JP2008 Phase 3E MASTIS Terminals for the RAN (Prime: BAE Systems). (MASTIS project was the design and manufacture of a shipborne tracking Ka-band satellite system) and the successful completion of JP2008 Phase 3E CTRS Land Terminals for the Australian Army (Prime: BAE Systems). (Flyaway Ka-band system.)

Currently John Logan is leading the WGS Certification Programme for EM Solutions’ Satcom on the Move (SOTM) Ka-band Satellite Terminal. There are currently no terminals of this type certified in the world. SOTM is a VSAT terminal developed for the Australian Defence Forces as part of a CTD programme.

Prior to joining EM Solutions Pty Ltd in 2003, John Logan worked at Filtronic PLC which was a high volume manufacturer of microwave filters for cellular base station infrastructure. Filtronic PLC was one of the world’s largest providers of microwave filters with approximately 3000 employees
worldwide. Customers included NEC, Nokia and Huawei.

John Logan has almost twenty years industrial experience in the satellite telecommunications and electronics industry.
