Event Description

Full Description:
Combining elements of carnival, 1920s freak sideshows and vaudeville, UQ Drama’s edgy and confronting production of Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal, directed by Dr. Sean F. Edgecomb, will have you riveted to your seats. Performed by current UQ drama students, the performance uses Vsevolod Meyerhold’s theory of biomechanics, a foundational training system that inspired German Expressionism.

Machinal is based on the true story of New Yorker Ruth Snyder, who murdered her husband and became the first woman ever to be executed by electric chair. The play follows Helen, a young woman, and her attempts to negotiate work, marriage and motherhood. Never able to truly fit in, she finds herself trapped in a machine-like world and goes to extreme measures in an attempt to escape it.

This exciting 85th anniversary production of a classic American Expressionist play promises to be a thrilling night out. So enter the machine…if you dare.
