- Please join us for a talk by the artist Robert MacPherson. The exhibition 'Marioni/MacPherson' includes a number of works by Robert MacPherson that date from the late 1970s. In this talk, he will provide a wider context for these works. Robert MacPherson will be joined by the exhibition curator Rex Butler and Michele Helmrich.
Robert MacPherson was born in Brisbane in 1937, and continues to live and work in Brisbane. Exhibiting since the early 1970s, his work has received national acclaim. MacPherson was one of the first artists to exhibit at Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art in 1975, and has since held ten solo exhibitions there, including a survey exhibition of his work in 1985. In 2001, the major survey exhibition 'Robert MacPherson' was held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, and toured to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. In 1992, MacPherson was awarded an honorary doctorate (DUniv) from Griffith University. In 1997, he was presented with the prestigious Emeritus Award (now known as the Laureate Award) by the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, the Federal Government’s arts funding and advisory body, in recognition of his significant contribution to Australian visual arts and culture. Robert MacPherson’s art is represented in most major national public collections.
Rex Butler is Associate Professor and Reader in Art History at The University of Queensland and curator of the exhibition 'Marioni/MacPherson'.
Michele Helmrich is Associate Director (Curatorial) UQ Art Museum.
