Event Description

Full Description:
Professor Catherine Morgan is the Director of the British School at Athens and the 2012 Visiting Professor for the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. In this free public seminar she will discuss how Before WWII, the British School at Athens mounted the first systematic, large-scale exploration of Ithaca, the Greek island whose Homeric heritage has inspired travellers and
antiquarians since the early 19th c. While its main goal, the palace of Odysseus, remains elusive, the expedition made rich discoveries of settlements, shrines and graves from the Neolithic period to early modern times. This seminar presents the early expedition as a human as well as an archaeological story, offering insights into life on the island in the years before the catastrophic earthquake of 1953. New archaeological findings illustrate a series of stories about society and international connections on Ithaca from prehistory to Roman times, reflecting sharp changes in the political circumstances of the wider region.
