Presenter: Professor Amareswar Galla
The past three decades have witnessed a phenomenal transformation in Australian higher educational institutions, especially in the context of Asia. The paradigm shift is from the patriarchy of Colombo Plan and White Australia Policy to the present commitment to ‘Social Inclusion’ and the ‘Asian Century’.
In this context, universities are often struggling to delineate and strategically address their equity and diversity commitment to Australians of all backgrounds; aspirational plans for internationalisation of pedagogy; and ambitious marketing of educational export services to weather tough economic times.
The speaker proposes that an integrated sustainable systems approach is best suited to develop a holist approach to bring together all the three elements of internationalisation, intercultural dialogue and educational export services.
He draws on his experience of working in Australian universities over the past three decades as a migrant from Asia and chairing various equity and diversity committees. He is actively engaged in developing inclusive policy frameworks at the local, state, national and international levels.
Born and educated in both south and north India including the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, Professor Galla provides strategic cultural leadership in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region as the Professor of Museum Studies at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Until recently, he was the Professor and Director of Sustainable Heritage Development, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, the Australian National University in Canberra.
He is the Guest Curator of International Projects, Vietnam National Department of Cultural Heritage; Chairperson, Cross Cultural Task Force, International Council of Museums, Paris; and Founding Convener of the Pacific Asia Observatory for Cultural Diversity in Sustainable Heritage Development in partnership with several bodies including UNESCO.
His recent work on the use of ecomuseology as a methodological tool for sustainable development and poverty alleviation has won him outstanding conservationist of the year award from the Vietnamese Government in 2002 and 2006 and the European Best in Heritage Award in 2008. |
