Description:	‘Walk or wheel in the shoes’ diversity event in UQ’s Diversity-Week! This event will be held lunchtime from 1 to 2.30pm in the foyer of the social sciences building and will have activities out on the footpath area on tables to encourage passerby’s to try the activities as well. The activities set up would simulate physical as well as hidden disabilities such as blindness, intellectual impairment, hearing impairment, speech language problems, Dyslexia, physical disability etc. We will demonstrate and then have participants involved in the ‘experience’ of using a wheelchair, playing touch sensitive games and trying vision glasses and many other simulations etc. There will be a large canvas and paint and pens and all participants will be able to add a feature to the canvas to form a lasting statement of participation from UQ diversity week 2009. This final art piece would then be framed and handed to the university to hang it where they wanted on the campus. It aims to encourage others to ‘walk in the shoes’ of someone from a different background, with alternate attributes, and abilities than themselves. It aims to encourage staff and students to link these ideas to their own teaching and learning within the university which promote a deeper understanding of diversity in our University and its wider community.
