- “A Life beyond Life”: A Day of Public Readings from Milton’s Poetry and Prose to Celebrate his 400th Anniversary
John Milton was born in 1608. One of the most ambitious writers of the English language, he fervently hoped that he “might perhaps leave something to aftertimes, as they should not willingly let it die.”
On Sunday 17 August, from 10am to 4pm, the University of Queensland will host a celebratory day of public readings from Milton’s poetry and prose at Duchesne College. Readers will be coming from near and far to participate.
They include past and present students and academic staff, visiting scholars, poets, teachers, actors, lawyers, and politicians. The day will be opened by the Honourable Matt Foley, former Queensland Minister for the Arts.
Readers include:
• David Malouf
• Ian Callinan
• Diane McColley
• Stephen Fallon
• John Hale
• Eugene Gilfedder
• Stephen Carleton
• Bronwyn Lea
• Anthony Lawrence
• Felicity Plunkett
• Jaya Savige
• The Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble
The day of readings will show that Milton indeed achieved a “life beyond life,” and that he is – as William Wordsworth hoped – still “living at this hour.”
The morning program will feature selections from the whole span of Milton’s writing career, including L’Allegro and Il Penseroso, Lycidas, Comus, sonnets, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes; and the afternoon will feature selections from Milton’s extraordinary epic poem, Paradise Lost.
If you would like to attend this event please RSVP to Meegan Capsopoulos (meegancapsopoulos@hotmail.com). Lunch will be available at Duchesne College at a cost of $20.00 payable on the day (please let Meegan know if you would like to book) or you may purchase lunch from a range of cafés and restaurants within walking distance of Duchesne.
