About the seminar:
The recent World Trade Organisation Panel decision concerning the approval and marketing of genetically modified (GM) foods and products in Europe has provoked various responses, including criticism of the decision as an interference of trade law in the European Commission’s exercise of environmental principles. This seminar examines developments in agricultural biotechnology in Europe, as well as co-existence frameworks, particularly in the context of consumer responses and the socio-cultural circumstances for such new markets. In the context of international trade and intellectual property protection, the case of GM in Europe provides important insight into the political and cultural factors that, through the location of value in use, may limit the viability of certain products. Considering ways in which the debate concerning markets in GM crops in Europe is taking place not only within the agenda of international and free trade, but also from the perspectives of cultural diversity and national integrity within an expanding Europe and throughout the international knowledge economy, the discussion will highlight considerations for other jurisdictions and for development.
