Event Description

Full Description:
Physical activity plays an important role in both maternal and child health, and should be considered a front-line for enhancing maternal physical and mental health. Previous studies, mostly conducted in high income countries, have shown that physical activity levels decrease during pregnancy and the time course of return to pre-pregnancy levels is unclear. Cohort studies in low- and middle-income countries are less common but can make important contributions to understanding levels, patterns, inequalities and social determinants of physical activity during and after pregnancy.

Dr Gregore Mielke will provide an overview of his collaborative work with the Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Studies, in which about 20,000 children, adolescents and adults are being followed up since they were born in 1982, 1993, 2004 and 2015. He will present findings from these cohorts on 1) changes in physical activity and sitting time in women during and after pregnancy; and 2) the correlates of physical activity and high sitting time in women 24 months after pregnancy.

Dr Gregore Iven Mielke is a UQ Development Fellow in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences.
