Event Description

Full Description:
Student-Staff Partnerships (SSP) are at the cutting-edge of innovation in the university sector as they enable students and staff to collaborate equally as colleagues and peers. SSP represents a fundamental shift away from the traditional hierarchical mode of university student engagement, as it empowers students to contribute to the intellectual design and development of initiatives that seek to enhance the student experience.

At the UQ Student-Staff Partnerships Showcase delegates will hear from UQ students, staff and individuals from other universities who have collaborated on projects to enhance the university experience and hear from students who have served as representatives on University or Faculty Committees. Delegates will learn what student-staff partnerships are, how they can be involved, and will walk away with practical strategies for engaging as partners to enhance learning, teaching, and the university experience.

Cathy Bovill, an internationally renowned scholar in the academic field of Students as Partners from the University of Edinburgh, will present as the keynote speaker for the event on ‘The Dynamics of Partnership’. Catherine will examine some of the challenges faced by those working in partnership, and how challenges can be reformulated as opportunities. In order to ensure that we enact partnership values such as respect, responsibility and reciprocity, Cathy will argue that we need to maintain criticality in all our work.

The Showcase will include interactive workshops, presentations and lightening talks that address a number of themes related to Student-Staff Partnerships including:
-Unpacking the purpose of Student-Staff Partnerships
-Learning together and enhancing employability
-Building team cohesion
-Navigating power dynamics
-SSP topics outside of these themes are also welcome

The University of Queensland is championing the way for Student-Staff Partnership. The UQ Student-Staff Partnership initiative is the largest scale implementation of Student-Staff Partnerships in the world with over 300 student partners in 2018 and growing. There are also currently 250 student representatives on Committees at UQ and by 2020 UQ will be directly responsible for helping over 1000 students to participate in student voice activities throughout UQ.

The SSP Showcase is sold out but if you are interested in joining the Student-Staff Partnership initiative, visit the UQ SSP website to find out how you can get involved.
