Full Description:
Professor Bimal Sinha, a Fellow of ASA & IMS, is an internationally renowned statistician.

He was awarded UMBC’s highest academic honour: Presidential Research Professorship, during 2000 – 2003, and also the University System of Maryland Board of Regents highest academic honour in 2012. Professor Sinha is the author of more than one hundred and fifty original research papers, several books, recipient of Distinguished Medal from ASA’s Section on the Environment, and is an expert in many theoretical and applied areas of statistics.

After a brief introduction to the subject of meta-analysis, a description of various standard measures of effect size based on means, proportions, phi-coefficient, odds ratio, and correlations will be provided. We will illustrate how to estimate these measures along with the properties of these estimates.

We will then explain a) methods of combining individual tests of effect sizes based on combination of P-values, and b) methods of combining individual estimates of effect sizes. Some illustrative examples will be given.

2. We will discuss a) the common mean problem, b) some tests of the important hypothesis of homogeneity of population effect sizes, and c) main results on one-way random effects model. The application of these methods to the meta-analysis of controlled experiments with normal outcome will then be demonstrated.

3. Some further aspects of meta-analysis for binary data, combination of polls, and explaining heterogeneity using meta-regression techniques will also be covered.
