Title: Neurobiology of Body Fat Metabolism: Lessons from C. elegans
Abstract: The central nervous system is a major regulator of whole body energy balance and fat metabolism. The molecular, genetic and circuit mechanisms by which the CNS regulates peripheral metabolism are still largely unknown. Using the C. elegans model system, we are identifying the key neurons, neural circuits and neuroendocrine mechanisms that couple discrete sensory modalities, and environmental information, with metabolic outputs. In the metabolic tissues, we are deciphering the connections between fat metabolism, stress response and longevity. Our long-term goal is to identify instructive molecular and neuroendocrine mechanisms that control metabolism over the life course, and illustrate the underlying regulatory principles.
