Event Description

Full Description:
Lecture Title: Connected Histories: Japan and Australia, 1966–2016.
Professor Vera Mackie will visit our School through the Distinguished Visitors Program.

Professor Mackie is Associate Dean, Research in the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts and Senior Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Wollongong. Professor Mackie's interests include Japanese language and linguistics, Japanese history, gender studies and cultural studies.

Abstract:
Fifty years ago the University of Queensland established its Japanese Studies Program. It was one of several institutions in Australia to establish Japanese languages and studies programs in the mid-1960’s. This was part of a broader economic and political relationship between Japan and Australia. In this lecture I consider how the Japan-Australia relationship has developed in the subsequent five decades; some significant individuals in this relationship; and the place of the Japanese studies profession in this relationship.
