Event Description

Full Description:
Philosophy and the Foundations for an Environmental Culture with Dominic Hyde and panellists Roger Lamp and William Grey

Abstract:
Australian philosophers Richard Routley/Sylvan and Val Routley/Plumwood sought to understand the world and they wanted to change it – describing (highly unorthodox) political, ethical, logical and metaphysical foundations for what they argued was a necessary environmental counter culture. In so doing they were instrumental in developing environmental philosophy as a new sub-discipline, alongside brilliant work in logic and metaphysics … and a landmark book that changed Australian forestry policy. These ambitious, idiosyncratic, fearless and anarchic Australian intellectuals show the relevance of philosophy to life: a life carefully considered, that they lived simply in the forest.
