Event Description

Full Description:
Professor Peter Nestor, Group Leader, German Center for Neurodegenerative Disease (DZNE), Leipziger Str, Magdeberg, Germany
Title: The truth or the technique: imaging insights into Alzheimer's disease
Abstract:
Several pathological events occur in Alzheimer's disease. There are histopathological features, namely amyloid and tau, and there is neuronal and synaptic loss. Moreover, as with all degenerative neurological diseases, the brain is not affected uniformly-some areas are more vulnerable than others. Understanding what makes some regions impervious to degeneration could lead to approaches that prevent degeneration in those areas that are vulnerable. The first step though, is to build a comprehensive picture of the areas that are vulnerable, and here neuroimaging techniques such as MRI and PET offer considerable promise. The talk will focus on insights into mapping the landscape of degeneration with non-invasive imaging. It will also, however, highlight how differential sensitivity and limitations in analysis algorithms can lead to false conclusions.
