Event Description

Full Description:
The Physical Activity Innovation in Schools (PAIS) project, funded under the Queensland Healthy Children Initiative, seeks to develop new and innovative ways to incorporate physical activity into school time. It reflects a commitment to the development of evidence-based strategies for increasing physical activity levels in schools.

This seminar, presented by Dr Michalis Stylianou, Dr Eimear Enright and A/Prof Cliff Mallett focuses on preliminary findings from an evaluation study that sought to assess the effectiveness of one regional PAIS project -Central Queensland Sporty Schools.

117 teachers, and 887 Year 3 and 4 students in 31 primary schools in Central Queensland were surveyed. Data collection methods included pre- and post-surveys and focus group interviews with school administrators, staff and students.

Preliminary findings suggest that schools (administrators, teachers and students) value bottom-up approaches to physical activity programming. Local decision making around the use of the available funds allowed schools to capitalise on the strengths of sport expertise in their local contexts. In terms of attitudes, students reported significant increases in their enjoyment of physical activity from pre- to post-survey. Classroom teachers’ attitudes to physical activity were positive from the outset; however, in both the pre- and post-surveys, teachers reported the crowded curriculum and inadequate training as barriers inhibiting their delivery of physical activity.
