Event Description

Full Description:
The analysis of oxygen consumption (VO2) and other respiratory parameters is common practice in many land-based elite sports (i.e. triathlon, running, race walking, cycling) and provides a valuable tool for the prescription of training zones and monitoring of training adaptations throughout a training season. Portable gas analysis technology can be used in swimming conditions too, however the use of such technology in aquatic environments has the potential to be problematic.

This presentation, given by Ms Kirsten Morris (PhD student with the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences) will provide an overview of the issues that have been encountered and overcome while using the gas analysis system with elite swimmers and will subsequently discuss the results from a recent study investigating the velocity and metabolic cost of whole-body and arms-only swimming across a variety of stroke rates.
