- Seminar: When the Glass Ceiling Meets the Maternal Wall
Dr Tyler Okimoto will present a seminar discussing the question: does the glass ceiling get thicker where it meets the maternal wall? In business, politics, and universities, women continue to be under-represented in the highest positions of power and leadership. This is partly due to traditional gender roles that assign a disproportionate share of the parental duties to women, often interfering with career progression. But the maternal wall is not just brick and mortar – even if parents are able to cope with the practicalities of having a family and a career, motherhood can amplify the gender expectations that bias evaluations women’s leadership capability.
This seminar takes a “deep dive” into the gender and parental expectations that manifest subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) biases. Does the glass ceiling get thicker where it meets the maternal wall? Even if you don’t plan to have children, will your career be impacted by motherhood expectations? Do family-friendly policies ever inhibit career progression? Join the conversation as we unpack the problems created by gender expectations and explore the institutional and individual strategies that might help to overcome them.
Dr Tyler Okimoto is a Senior Lecturer in the UQ Business School, whose work on barriers for women's attainment of leadership roles has been featured in the American Association of University Women 2010 report, ‘Why so few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics’, the recent book, ‘How to Publish High-Quality Research’, Harvard University’s ‘Gender Action Portal’, and an extended television segment on ‘Good Morning America’.
