Event Description
- Full Description:
- This week the Sustainable Minerals Institute will host a seminar by Dr Joel M. Haight on 'Safely Managing the Design and Use of Automated and Adaptive Control Systems'. Automated control systems provide immeasurable benefit however, at a cost if humans are not actively engaged (i.e. skill, knowledge, and decision-making capability losses). This paper’s purpose is to raise awareness of problems with automation and ask human factors and safety professionals to contribute to the design process and help safely guide automation’s expansion without robbing the system of valuable human input. An understanding of human response is part of this picture.
Dr Joel Haight is Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He has a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Auburn University and has spent 12 years as researcher and professor, 4 years as research manager in U.S. Federal government and 18 years as an engineer and manager in the oil industry.
