Event Description

Full Description:
This week the Sustainable Minerals Institute will host a seminar on 'Integrating environmental and social aspects into the design of resource projects – a practitioner’s view'. This seminar will be presented by Mr Alan Irving, of Alan Irving & Associates and will present examples from various feasibility studies and projects, in order to show the types of trade‐offs that are made in practice so that mining and mineral processing projects can proceed. Such trade‐off’s include engineering, environmental and community compromises. The audience will gain an appreciation of the variety of situations project proponents encounter and see examples of how well or how badly these can be dealt with.

Alan Irving has worked in the field of environmental management and impact assessment in the mining industry since the 1980’s. He has a Masters’ degree in mine rehabilitation from The University of Queensland. He has held environmental roles in mines in East Kalimantan, West Papua, and throughout Australia. For the last decade he was Principal Environmental Advisor with Rio Tinto, specialising in feasibility studies for new projects and brownfield expansions, either as a study team member or technical reviewer. These studies have included environmental and social impact assessment, stakeholder consultation and mapping regulatory approval regimes in Australia, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Peru, Paraguay, Mongolia and Mozambique. Alan now has his own consultancy.
