Event Description
- Full Description:
- Nutrition is often perceived a soft science because it is “just common sense'. Yet the prevalence of chronic disease that is nutrition-related and entirely preventable is skyrocketing in our well-developed and high-tech societies. What is happening, and how has 'common sense' been lost? There appears to be a large disconnection between what consumers perceive about the food products currently available on supermarkets, health food stores and pharmacy shelves, and what they really are: products of savvy marketing. Regulatory bodies are trusted to modulate marketing strategies, yet may not be able to monitor objectively the volume of products released, and the swift to adapt marketing approaches. This showcase will point out the gaps in knowledge and understanding that need addressing to revive common sense in consumers, when it comes to choosing food products. The preliminary results of two pilot studies undertaken by graduating students of the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics will be presented, with audio-visual material supporting the conundrum that may play a prevalent role in the nutrition-related chronic disease epidemic.
Dr Veronique Chachay is a lecturer in nutrition science and researcher at the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, and a Clinical Academic Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Veronique will be presenting with two of her research students Jessica McMaster and Megan Phipps.
