Event Description

Full Description:
“Does a belief in revelation impose severe limitations on the creative freedom of Christian artists?”

On the face of it, the question is counter-intuitive; after all, the Western imagination has been nourished precisely by Judeo-Christian revelation. Yet we can advance our understanding by asking ourselves, first, about “revelation”: the history of the concept, and how we might talk about it. Further, we need to inspect the notion of “creative freedom” and the understanding of “revelation” that is in play when that freedom would be curtailed. And finally, we need to investigate what it would mean for someone to be a “Christian artist” as distinct from an “artist.” These various threads lead to a conclusion that is perhaps surprising.

Kevin Hart holds the Edwin B. Kyle Chair of Christian Thought in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia where he also holds professorships in the Department of English and the Department of French. In addition he holds the Eric D’Arcy Chair of Philosophy at the Australian Catholic University. His most recent books include Kingdoms of God (Indiana UP, 2014) and Wild Track: New and Selected Poems (Notre Dame UP, 2015). A new scholarly volume, Poetry and Revelation, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury, and a new collection of poetry, Barefoot, is forthcoming from Notre Dame UP.
