ABSTRACT
Only a small proportion of the worlds plant pathogenic fungi have been discovered and named. Fungal taxonomists and plant pathologists have an urgent and daunting task to unravel this biological complexity. The molecular revolution in fungal taxonomy that started in the 1990s has provided new tools to decipher the evolutionary relationships of fungi and improve their taxonomy. This revolution was responsible for overturning the dual system of nomenclature for anamorphic and teleomorphic fungal names; the selection of the internal transcribed spacer as the universal DNA barcode gene for fungi; and the routine application of molecular diagnostic methods in mycology and plant pathology laboratories around the world. The consequences of this revolution are considered by looking at the taxonomy of some important groups of plant pathogenic fungi in Australia, including the rust and smut fungi, cercosporoid fungi, helminthosporium-like fungi, and downy mildews.
About Dr Roger Shivas
Dr Roger Shivas has worked for more than 30 years as a plant pathologist and taxonomic mycologist in Australia and overseas, often travelling to remote corners of the world in pursuit of fungi. He has published over 200 papers, named over 400 new fungal species, and been acknowledged by the smut genus Shivasia. Presently Dr Shivas is a Principal Plant Pathologist with Biosecurity Queensland and is a Visiting Professor with the Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as with Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand.
