Event Description

Full Description:
This week the Sustainable Minerals Institute will host a seminar on 'Fathoming Liability in the Context of Deep Sea Mining'. This seminar will be presented by Professor Don Anton, Professor of International Law at the Griffith Law School and will consider how the due diligence obligation of States sponsoring activities in their area, necessitates the adoption of financial mechanisms to fill the existing gap in liability for environmental harm. Don Anton is currently leading a three-year project on deep seabed mining funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that is exploring development opportunities and environmental challenges posed by DSM for Pacific Island States. He served as Counsel for the IUCN in the Advisory Proceedings in the Seabed Disputes Chamber of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on responsibility and liability of States sponsoring activities in the Area. He also served on the Australian delegation to the 20th Annual Session of the International Seabed Authority, which was instrumental in steering a decision through Council that called for the beginning of the development of exploitation.
