- Full Description:
- The University of Queensland presents Marat/Sade
Set within the confines of the bathhouse in the infamous Charenton Insane Asylum in 1808, former aristocrat and now inmate Marquis de Sade directs his play about the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat fifteen years earlier. The other inmates perform Sade’s rendition of the assassination, through provocative song and dance. Schizophrenics, narcoleptics and erotomaniacs act out the bloody, gruesome and brutal nature of the French Revolution. Marat and Sade debate life, death and revolution as the assassination unfolds. Marat/Sade is individualism vs. collectivism, emotional vs. rational, rich vs. poor and the insane vs. the sane. As Coulmier, the director of the clinic says, things are better now…
