Event Description
- Full Description:
- This week the Sustainable Minerals Institute will host a seminar on 'The Role of Local Procurement in Responsible Mining', by Jeff Geipel from Engineers without Borders Canada. It will examine the role that local purchases of goods and services by mining operations can have in creating economic and social development. It will examine the business case for companies to invest in initiatives to increase local procurement, showing how local procurement helps companies obtain their social licence to operate. Included will be case studies from companies including Anglo American and Newmont. In the last few years there has been a global surge in attention on the issue of local procurement, and this presentation will overview recent initiatives from the World Bank, OECD and other major players. Jeff Geipel is the founder and venture leader for Mining Shared Value at Engineers Without Borders Canada. This venture works to improve the development impacts of mineral extraction through encouraging an increase in local procurement by mining companies. Mining Shared Value works with a wide variety of stakeholders including mining companies, industry organizations and international government bodies including the World Bank. Before this, Jeff was the founder and first executive director of Fair Trade Vancouver. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Jeff holds a master’s degree in international development from the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom. Jeff currently resides in Toronto.
