Event Description

Full Description:
This week the Sustainable Minerals Institute will host a seminar by Dr Nicole George, titled 'Women’s reflections on mining in Bougainville and New Caledonia' This seminar will examine the diverse positions that women occupy when they reflect on the impacts of mining in Pacific Island communities. It will show how these positions are shaped not only by immediate socio-cultural or environmental concerns, but also by sympathetic personal reflections on historical experience and broader concerns about the political and economic future / autonomy of their island territories. Nicole George is a Senior Lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies and Australian Research Council DECRA Award Fellow (2013-2016) in the School of Politics and International Studies at the University of Queensland. Nicole’s research projects are currently focused on the politics of gender, conflict, violence, peacebuilding and conflict transformation. Her research has been conducted in the Pacific region and is theoretically informed by feminist work on questions of political agency and participation. She has recently published a book with the ANU Press examining the history of women's organising in post-colonial Fiji against a backdrop of global and local political change, and has published a number of articles on women’s peacebuilding, community politics, and regional engagement with the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda in a range of scholarly journals, including Australian Journal of International Affairs, The Contemporary Pacific, and the Australian Feminist Law Review.
