Abstract
CSIRO has been investigating the use of on- and off-animal monitoring and control technologies to improve the profitability and sustainability of livestock production. Information and communication technologies (ICT) can reduce labour costs and offer precision management options. In other industries and agriculture sectors, ICT have allowed businesses to remain competitive by reducing labour requirements and costs. Within the livestock industries the uptake of technologies is starting to increase with producers using off-animal monitoring devices like walk-over-weighing to collect weekly individual live weight data and tank and trough monitoring equipment to ensure a secure water supply. Scientists at CSIRO have developed livestock monitoring devices to monitor both the location and behaviour of animals, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of how animals use their environment. The ultimate goal is to provide the industry with management recommendations to improve production and environmental outcomes. This work involves a multidisciplinary team including embedded systems hardware and software engineers, mathematicians and animal scientists.
