Event Description
- Full Description:
- The Sustainable Minerals Institute are hosting a seminar this week by Pam Bourke, lecturer in Community Relations, called 'Dialogue Training for the Resource Sector'. The dialogical method of development practice has emerged over several decades. It draws from many different traditions of development practice in particular the work of Paulo Freire, Martin Buber and Mahatma Gandhi.
Anthony Kelly has adapted the methodology to train practitioners working with communities in the resource sector. The training provides frameworks and practical skills to help practitioners build relationships of trust with communities and to support participatory approaches to development. While participant feedback in the training has been positive, evaluation of the longer term impacts of the training for participants, communities, companies and the resource sector more broadly is needed.
There are a number of opportunities to embed a dialogical approach to community relations in the resource sector including:
- Training for civil society and government stakeholders
- Training for managers in the resource sector
- Integrating dialogical approaches into mining governance e.g. requirements for engagement
- Providing guidance to companies on the policies, systems and processes required to support effective dialogue with communities
Pam Bourke has 35 years’ experience in working with Local and State governments, NGOs and the private sector to facilitate greater community engagement and development. Pam has designed, managed and delivered community development programs in Australia and New Zealand for local and state governments and provided training in Community Development and Engagement for the Resources Sector in Australia, Canada and Latin America. Pam teaches Community Relations for the Resource Sector at The University of Queensland, Queens University in Canada and Catolica University in Chile. Pam is active in her own community supporting greater community involvement in a range of areas including urban planning and development.
