Event Description

Full Description:
Professor Richard Ryan, co-founder of Self-Determination Theory will share his inspiring findings and illustrate how we can improve our practices in this guest lecture.

A primary aim of clinicians and educators is that of engaging children and adolescents in learning, growth and health-promoting activities. Yet specific adult attitudes and practices can undermine or facilitate motivation and leave children and adolescents feeling either willingly engaged or alienated and unmotivated.

Join us to discuss:
• the critical aspects of teacher, clinician and parent styles that are associated with enhanced motivation;
• how adults' support for young peoples' feelings of autonomy, competence and relatedness can enhance intrinsic motivation and internalisation of views;
• common barriers to adults' ability to support children's psychological needs;
• and institutional supports needed to develop high quality motivational environments.

Professor Ryan will also open to the audience for questions and discussion in this unique opportunity.
