Event Description

Full Description:
In recent decades, the fitness, sport and leisure industries have boomed, whilst levels of inactivity and obesity have continued to rise. In 2013, the global health club industry generated annual revenues of US$77.5 billion and served 140 million users. At the heart of this global industry is a rapidly developing workforce of ‘fitness professionals’. This group are becoming increasingly implicated in a plethora of societal health-related aspirations and agendas. The purpose of this presentation is to provide critical analysis of the growing claims made about the role of fitness professionals as public health assets. In this presentation it is argued – and illustrated – that many challenges will need to be addressed if fitness professionals are to deliver all that is expected of them.

Presenter:
Alex de Lyon is a Doctoral Researcher in The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Birmingham (UK). His research is concerned with the professional training, development and practice of fitness professionals and its impact on the lives of fitness/exercise participants. This research is founded on over five years of experience working in the fitness and leisure industries in roles such as a fitness instructor, personal trainer, sports massage therapist and group exercise instructor. In the context of sport, Alex has contributed to professional development research projects for major national governing bodies in the UK. He has also presented his research both nationally and internationally to reach a wide range of audiences.
