Title: Insect Ocelli: Eyes for every function - Results of traditional and X-ray CT techniques

Abstract:
In addition to a pair of compound eyes, almost all adult insects possess three single–lens eyes, known as ocelli. The functional advantages of having two distinct different eye types remain unclear. Structural analysis using traditional and x-ray CT techniques, however, show that each species of insect has its ocelli especially designed according to its life style – walking or flying, nocturnal or day active, male or female, collecting food or hunting for prey. This talk will describe the anatomical structures of a variety of insect ocelli and speculate on their functions.
