Event Description

Full Description:
CSRM Senior Research Fellow Dr Kathryn Sturman is presenting a seminar on 'Near-sourcing food for sustainable development in Africa: Opportunities and challenges for local procurement by mining companies in Tanzania and Mozambique'. These countries in southern Africa depend on their agriculture sectors for food security and employment. Although mining can bring opportunities for communities to move beyond subsistence farming, often imported food and large-scale catering services are trucked or flown in from South Africa and elsewhere. In this seminar Dr Sturman presents two case studies of local food procurement by ASX-listed mining companies operating in Tanzania and Mozambique. The studies were conducted by Dr Sturman and Dr Ola Bello as an action research projected funded by the International Mining for Development Centre. Dr Sturman's work focuses on governance initiatives in the extractives industries and she has regional experience in Africa.
