- Gail began her banking career in 1980 in South Africa, and by 2001 had held various senior management roles in a broad range of areas, including retail and commercial banking, strategy, marketing and human resources. Gail has spent the last twelve years as CEO of two Australian banks, St.George Bank from 2002 to 2007 and Westpac from 2008 to date.
Westpac has grown to become one of the fifteen largest banks in the world by market capitalisation. Under Gail's leadership, Westpac Group today serves 12 million customers, employs around 35,000 people and has over 1,500 branches. In 2014, Westpac was ranked number one in ‘Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World’ at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Gail sits on: the Australian Bankers’ Association, the Business Council of Australia, the Financial Markets Foundation for Children, the Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust, the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council, and is also CARE Australia’s Ambassador for Women’s Empowerment.
Internationally, she sits on the Global Board of Advisers at the US Council on Foreign Relations, and is a member of the Group of Thirty.
