Event Description

Full Description:
Presented by the UQ Law School in collaboration with Caxton Legal Centre Inc, Queensland University of Technology, and Griffith University as part of the Social Justice Forum Series. Established in 2013 the Series brings together experts to discuss topical legal and socio-legal issues.
Recent events in Queensland including the so called 'Bikie legislation', mandatory sentencing and government ministers speaking out publicly about the behaviour of judges have raised concerns that the separation of powers principle is not being properly applied in Queensland.

What does the separation of powers mean both theoretically and practically? How is the balance between the judiciary and executive to be struck? What are the risks when the separation of powers is out of balance?
