Dion's research interests include computational seismology and numerical modelling in mining and minerals processing. He is particularly interested in the application of numerical simulations to seismic hazard assessment within Australia and is investigating the seismicity patterns of South-East Queensland as part of an ARC Linkage Project with the Queensland State Government Department of Main Roads. Dion also collaborates with the University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute and JKMRC on projects examining rock breakage in comminution and blocking caving. Dion is an active participant in the APEC Cooperation for Earthquake Simulation (ACES) through which he has established collaborative links with leading international researchers in the Seismology and Statistical Physics communities. Dion received his PhD. in Theoretical Geophysics in June, 2002 and held an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship from 2002-2005. He completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics and Applied Mathematics in 1997 and received First Class Honours in 1998 for his numerical investigations on earthquake rupture propagation.
