Honours/Masters Projects in Earthquake Seismology

ESSCC has a distinguished history in earthquake monitoring and seismic hazard studies in Queensland. ESSCC operates seismographs in Brisbane and Monto, Queensland and monitors earthquakes in the Gold Coast region via a network of four seismographs owned by the Gold Coast City Council. ESSCC is dedicated to seismological research aimed at improving the detection, location and forecasting of earthquakes in Queensland.

Honours and Masters level projects are available in the following areas:

  • seismic inversion of regional blast recordings to construct 3D velocity models for seismically active regions
  • rapid-response strong ground motion prediction service for emergency management agencies
  • seismic hazard mapping and earthquake catalogue refinement
  • earthquake microtremor surveys to delineate areas prone to local site amplification of seismic waves
  • information systems for seismic data collection, automated analysis and information transfer

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree, including studies in one or more of the following fields:

  • earth science
  • seismology and/or exploration geophysics
  • mathematics and physics
  • information technology
  • geographical sciences

You will be supervised by Dr Dion Weatherley (Computational Seismologist) and will receive training in seismological data analysis from Mr Colin Lynam (Seismogram Analysist). For further information please contact Dion.
