Sexual Harassment
A young woman university student is very upset after being groped on campus by two young men from one of her classes. She wants to make a complaint to the university about the assault, but is dissuaded by both her male and female friends who tell her it was all “a joke” and that she is over-reacting.
Homophobia
A young gay man talks about being harassed and threatened by several other young men on campus at night. He talks about his fears of harassment and violence.
Cultural and faith based boundaries
A Muslim woman talks about her discomfort at the physical familiarity of an Australian student. She explains that she has tried to ask him to keep his distance and not be so familiar, but that she can’t make him understand that she feels uncomfortable about his behaviour.
Racism
A young Aboriginal man talks about the social awkwardness and alienation he feels from other student friends once they discover he is an Aboriginal person. He talks about how uncertain it makes him in his dealings with people when he thinks there is racism occurring, but that it covert and not easily identified.
Consequences of misconduct
The final module of RESPECT highlights the consequences that students may face if they are confronted with a charge of misconduct. A young law student talks about his fears of being asked to leave university because of charges of misconduct. He wonders if he will ever be able to salvage a career in the law with this in his background. He worries how he is going to explain to his parents that he has been excluded from University.
Students’ rights and responsibilities are outlined in the Student Charter
