The University of Queensland has pledged its support of the national “Racism. It Stops With Me’ campaign. The ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ campaign is an initiative of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and encourages individuals and organisations to promote awareness of the impacts of racism, and to prevent and eliminate racism in our community. For more information about this campaign, please see the "Racism, it Stops With Me" website.

What is Racism?

Racism can take many forms and can indirectly or directly exclude people from our community on the basis of perceptions of an individual’s race. Racism often manifests through unconscious bias or prejudice. Racism has a significant impact at an individual and community level. The AHRC identifies research that demonstrates that racism has a significant impact at an individual and community level, and is linked to poor physical and mental health.

How is UQ Involved?

The University of Queensland takes a very strong stance against racism, and is proud to be a part of this campaign. In participating in this national campaign, UQ is taking active steps towards eradicating racism from our society and make a real positive social change.  UQ supports the objectives of the campaign and will continue to do so once the campaign ends.

UQ’s objectives are closely aligned with the campaigns objectives and include:

  • Raise awareness among staff that racism is unacceptable and not tolerated in our community.
  • Give staff tools and resources needed to take practical action against racism.
  • Empower staff to prevent and respond effectively to racism.
  • Raise awareness that UQ is an inclusive space that embraces people from all different backgrounds and lifestyles and is open to new ideas and cultures.

The University of Queensland will achieve the above objectives by providing educational resources and toolkits for staff, promoting the campaign to raise awareness about the issue of racism, develop programs to educate and raise awareness about racism and organise an event to help promote the objectives of the campaign.
