A/Prof Peer Schenk seeks to understand how plants interact with beneficial and parasitic microorganisms and his team aims to identify important genes and metabolites that are involved in key processes during these interactions; for example genes that lead to disease resistance in plants. Hence the Plant-Microbe Interactions Lab specialises in a gene discovery approach using Plant and Microbial Functional Genomics and developed new methods to analyse gene expression accross species using Metatranscriptomics.
Peer developed the area of Algae Biotechnology, which has received significant support from ARC and industry. The aim of the Algae Biotechnology Lab is to develop local microalgae strains to sustainably produce biodiesel, protein-rich aquaculture feed, Omega-3 fatty acids and other high value products. A cost-effective large scale algae biorefinery module is currently being built that is able to use polluted water, brakish or seawater.
