Non-dramatic Poetry

John Fletcher

Non-Folio Publications

Prior to the publication of the first Beaumont and Fletcher folio in 1647 nineteen of their plays had already appeared in various quarto editions. As the first folio was primarily concerned with the publication of new material these all of these plays (with one exception) were excluded from its contents. The one exception was Beaumont's The Masque of the Inner Temple and Grey's Inns (published c. 1613) and it was the only dramatic work included in the first folio that had seen prior publication. The other eighteen excluded plays were included in the second folio of 1679.

The plays are:

  • Rollo, Duke of Normandy
  • The Wild Goose Chase
  • The Knight of the Burning Pestle
  • The Night Walker, or the Little Thief
  • The Coronation
  • Cupid's Revenge
  • Two Noble Kinsmen
  • Thierry and Theodoret
  • The Woman Hater

In addition to the above plays there remains one other play not included in either the first or second folios but, which is now almost universally recognized as a play that Fletcher had a hand in:

The play was first published in the 1623 Shakespeare folio but it is now considered as the product of a collaboration between Shakespeare and Fletcher.
