 Welcome

Welcome to the School of Education at The University of Queensland.  This community of scholars and students is one of the most highly regarded schools of education in Australia.

As a student and eventually a successful graduate, you will be joining a very large group of former students and graduates who have made significant contributions to education. This includes leading education researchers here and overseas, the ministers and senior administrators of many educational systems, past and present leaders of organisations like UNESCO and the OECD, and, of course, the thousands of teachers, principals and Director Generals who undertook their initial teacher education at The University of Queensland.

The teaching of education at The University of Queensland began in 1945, and the Faculty of Education was established in December 1949. In 1997 we were incorporated into the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. At present, we work closely with other Departments and Schools at UQ, offering joint degrees and programs.

Work intensification in schools and among educational professionals has become a fact of life in the new millennium. Our programs are designed to accommodate the complex and busy lifestyles of professional educators by offering flexible delivery of programs (via on-campus lectures or distance learning options); flexible entry and movement within programs; the ability to tailor individual programs to meet specific needs; recognition of prior learning; a high standard of facilities and resources available to students; high quality of research expertise and supervision; and an innovative research culture and community.

We were recently recognised as the top performing research school of education in Australia. This achievement has been built on a vibrant research and postgraduate culture led by scholars of national and international status who have produced over 100 books, monographs and articles a year.

So, a very warm welcome to the School of Education and I wish you all the best in your studies.
