Individual Award Nominees:

1. Dr Juliana de Nooy School of Contemporary Studies

Nominated for developing the First in Family Project launched in 2005. This initiative is aimed to provide strategic support to students at Ipswich campus who self-identify as being the first in their family to attend university. In addition Dr de Nooy has made a significant contribution to equity and diversity through provision of cross-cultural training for staff and in developing creative courses for students related to increasing cultural awareness.

2. Dr Margaret Johnston School of Agronomy and Horticulture

Nominated for her long term commitment to equity at Gatton campus, in particular, as one of very few academic women at Gatton, Dr Johnston has been a role model and a strong advocate for women on campus. She was instrumental in establishing the Affirmative Action Scholarships which increased women's participation in research activities within the Faculty. Dr Johnston has more recently been working with the Kamilaroi Aboriginal people to assist them in establishing a floriculture enterprise.

3. Professor Susan Hamilton BACS Faculty

Nominated for outstanding contribution to equity through mentoring many academic and general staff women and assisting their career development. Professor Hamilton was instrumental in establishing a buddy mentoring program for International students and took a key, contributing role in developing the University's Equity and Diversity Plan.

Group/Unit Award Nominees

1. Community Access Program Faculty of Arts

The Community Access program was established to provide an avenue for members of the community, who would not normally be able to engage with university learning, to participate in a degree program, as a non-assessed student. In particular, the program encourages older citizens to take up the opportunity to study alongside enrolled students. The addition of older ‘students' to the diverse mix of students has added a new and positive element to the classroom experience for all.

2. Goorie Berrimpa UQ Union

Nominated for their commitment coordinating a week of activities during ‘Sorry Week' each year, and in particular for organising the annual Sorry Day Dinner through the UQ Union. The event attracts over 300 guests, and is growing. It is an particularly important opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait community Elders to be welcomed at UQ and to be honoured for the important place they hold in their communities and in enriching the wider life of the University.

3. Ipswich Equity and Diversity Committee Ipswich Campus

A volunteer group of staff and students who came together to address equity and diversity issues on campus. Since forming in 2002, the Committee has gathered detailed information and lobbied hard to have childcare provided on campus. They have raised and assisted in resolving matters about transport and parking for students, and played a key role in supporting the development and implementation of the Family First Project at Ipswich campus. They have actively raised awareness of matters affecting students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, people with family or carer responsibilities, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
