Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Awards
The University of Queensland has a strong commitment to equity and diversity as evidenced by its Equity and Diversity Plan, which seeks to address those areas of greatest challenge, its comprehensive suite of equity policies and the wide range of related programs and initiatives. Diversity Week is one of those initiatives and UQ is the only University in Australia to have such an event.
The Diversity Week 2008 theme ‘The Spirit of Diversity' invites members of the University community to engage with the complex issues surrounding human spirituality, which demands an acknowledgement, recognition and celebration of our differences while searching for those commonalities that bind us together as human beings.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Awards are unique in providing official recognition to staff and students who have made a significant contribution to the University and its community in equity and diversity.
The Vice-Chancellor's Inaugural Alumni Equity and Diversity Award will also be presented this year. This award is in recognition of UQ alumni whose efforts have championed the equitable and inclusive treatment of under-represented groups throughout Queensland, Australia or overseas.
The VC’s Equity and Diversity Awards presentation and cocktail function will be the highlight event in Diversity Week 2008. This event is FREE OF CHARGE for staff and students of the University and their guests. You are encouraged to attend and to further extend the invitation to staff, students and external stakeholders. Details are as follows:
Date: Wednesday 14 May 2008
Time: 4pm for a 4:30pm start
Venue: Exhibition Hall, UQ Centre, Union Road, St Lucia Campus
The presentation of the Awards will be preceded by a panel discussion with opportunity for audience involvement, facilitated by broadcaster, writer and social commentator Mr Phillip Adams AO. The topic for discussion is "Wired for warfare? Packaged for peace? Does spirituality divide more than it unites?" Contributing to the panel will be:
- Professor Hûrriyet Babaçan - Professor of Social and Cultural Development, Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives, Victoria University.
- Ms Mary Graham - Community development/research consultant for the Kummara Association and consultant in Aboriginal community development.
- Dr Virginia F. Cawagas - Senior Fellow, University for Peace, Costa Rica and Project Coordinator, Multi-Faith Centre, Griffith University.
This event will be followed by a cocktail function. For catering purposes you will need to register your attendance.

The VC’s Equity and Diversity Awards function also provides an opportunity for senior staff of the University to invite key external stakeholders to attend this special celebration, to develop a greater understanding about the equity and diversity issues the University is addressing, and to meet our staff and students.
