Guidelines
The University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Awards 2009 will be presented in Diversity Week at the Vice-Chancellor's Awards function to be held on the evening of Thursday 28th May.
One Award to the value of $10,000 and a second Award to the value of $5,000 will be presented to a staff member or student, or a group or organisational unit of The University of Queensland.
Description
The University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Awards have been established to recognise and reward staff, students and organisational units of the University that have made a demonstrable commitment to equity and diversity within the University/its broader community.
In particular, the Awards recognise individuals and groups/organisational units who have 'gone the extra distance' in improving the culture and/or in enhancing the reputation of the University in the area of equity and diversity.

Selection process
The Equity Office administers the Awards. An adjudication panel is chaired by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and will be include representatives of the Senate Standing Committee for Equity, Diversity and the Status of Women, Senior Executive and the Director, The Equity Office. Nominations will be assessed on the following criteria:
The degree to which the activities undertaken have:
- extended beyond the normally expected contribution of the individual, group, or organisational unit,
- have been sustained over a period of time,
- assisted The University of Queensland to improve its outcomes related to its equity and diversity reporting requirements (i.e. Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency),
- contributed to greater awareness of equity and diversity among staff/students,
- enhanced the working or learning environment for people from diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds,
- provided a capacity for long-term impact within the University community,
- enhanced the reputation of the University in the wider community,
- addressed the University's equity and diversity strategic objectives (UQ Strategic Plan and/or UQ Equity and Diversity Plan).
Nominations considered suitable for The University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Award might include (but are not limited to):
Programs that have raised the level of ethical and social understanding in graduates.
- A relevant community outreach program that has brought credit to the University and demonstrated its commitment to equity and diversity.
- Organisational unit employment initiative that resulted in an increased number of Indigenous Australian staff.
- Staff member who has developed inclusive curriculum for a program of study.
- Student group proactively promoting multi-cultural understanding.
- Programs which can be demonstrated to have enhanced access, participation or success of students from underrepresented groups (eg disability, Indigenous Australian, Low SES).
- Positive role model provided by staff or student.
- Particularly successful educative and awareness program for staff or students about equity and diversity.
- Faculty or School initiatives that have specifically addressed equity and diversity.
- Initiatives that have enhanced UQ graduate employment opportunities.
- Proactive support for recruitment and promotion of female staff.
- Innovative support program for students from equity groups or international students.
- Long-term significant work in the wider community that has enhanced the reputation of the University.
