2007 Winners - Diversity Week Design Competition
Congratulations to Sonja Regenberg, winner of the 2007 Diversity Week design competition.

Sonja describes the markings on the work as being universal. The three handprints represent the three skin types: white, brown and black. Each colour depicts a different race, but when grouped together they are no longer disconnected. They are a whole community. The hand prints are the same size and shape, representing our equality. It was the referendum that changed the Australian Constitution giving equality to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Congratulations also to Catherine Black, receiving the Highly Commended award for her submission.
Catherine describes the work Tally Marks as depicting a rich tapestry of cultural diversity that is Australia. In recognition of the traditional owners of the land and their inclusion in the 1967 Referendum an image of Uluru is central to the painting. White lines cut across the painting dissecting the patchwork of designs, representative of the way European settlement cut across traditional Indigenous cultures. In keeping with the Diversity Week theme We all count, tally marks in black are prominently featured.
