Who we are
The University of Queensland School of Dentistry is a major oral health care facility in Queensland. We have over 100 dental chairs at our Turbot Street facility in the central business district of Brisbane. Our students undertake well over 50,000 patient appointments in a year. Undergraduate students study and train for five years to become a dentist or three years to become an oral health therapist. Postgraduate students are qualified dentists studying to become dental specialists.
Student clinics are the means by which we provide a first-class dental education to our students. Each student is required to treat a number of patients with a range of dental needs. All work is supervised by registered dentists and specialists who have an academic appointment with the University. We operate during the University’s teaching semester times via a strict assessment and appointment system.
Queensland Health contributes to the School of Dentistry’s funding. This arrangement allows the student clinics to treat 25% of patients for a defined range of treatments at much reduced or no costs (patients have to be publically eligible which includes holders of a Health Care Card, Pensioner Benefit Card, Seniors Card or Dept of Veterans’ Affairs Card). Around 75% of our patients are not covered by this funding arrangement and contribute to the costs of all treatment by way of a fee. Our fees are set at a reduced rate to the DVA and private practice charges to acknowledge that service is provided by people who are in training.
