In Brisbane, you can carry your bike on the City Cat river ferries and on some bus routes operated by buses fitted with racks for the bikes. You can also carry your bike on trains, but not in the heavy flow direction during peak hours.
However, there is no real point in bringing your bike on public transport if only to store it at UQ, so try to arrange secure parking where you catch the public transport. Ask about the secure bike lockers at most Citytrain stations.
For day students, the use of bike or bus and train is an ideal way to get to UQ Ipswich from Brisbane. Again, there is an increasing network of bike routes and bike paths across SEQ. If you enjoy cycling further either daily, or occasionally, or for recreation, or local tourism, then you can also explore by using the public transport system - either with or without your bike.
Trains
Bicycles travel free-of-charge on Citytrain services outside peak flow service times. This means all services other than those travelling towards the city between 7:00am - 9:30am, and, away from the city between 3:00pm - 6:30pm or through the CBD (Brunswick St, Central, Roma St) at these times.
Ferries
Passengers can take bikes on all CityCat and Council ferry services. It even travels for free on the CityCat! A new Bike Shelter has now been constructed at Orleigh Park - right next to the Ferry Terminal - for the secure storage of bicycles. For a usage fee of $55, you can have 24-hour access to the shelter for an entire year. For more information call Brisbane City Council on 3403 8888.
Buses
Bike racks are available on these bus routes:
- 432 Kenmore - University of Queensland
- 598/599 Great Circle Line Service
The bike racks are fitted to the front of the buses and it takes less than 10 seconds to load or unload your bike. The bike rack can hold two bikes at a time. Bikes need to be 22" or larger. You must load and unload your bike from the kerbside. Always let the bus driver know when you are loading and unloading your bike.
