The University of Queensland is self-insured for workers' compensation under the provisions of the Worker's Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003.

All claims for workers' compensation are managed by the Work Injury Management Team (WIM) within the Occupational Health and Safety Unit. The WIM Team is the provider of all claims and rehabilitation entitlements for University staff.

Benefits of self-insurance include:

  • earlier compensation payouts and medical treatment for injured staff
     
  • improved claims management and rehabilitation services for injured staff
     
  • more effective communication with injured staff and managers regarding workers' compensation matters, due to the University's employment of claims and rehabilitation managers, and
     
  • stronger incentives to prevent work-related injuries.
