 Answers to FAQ's

 Why are we upgrading?

ITS has made Office 2007 the default version of Office in the standard operating environment at UQ. Support for Office 2003 is also being phased out by Microsoft.

 What happened to the menus?

Learn to love the Ribbon. The ribbon at the top of Office 2007 documents presents commands organized into a set of tabs. The tabs on the Ribbon display the commands that are most relevant for each of the task areas in the applications. For example, in Office Word 2007, the tabs group commands for activities such as inserting objects like pictures and tables, doing page layout, working with references, doing mailings, and reviewing. The Home tab provides easy access to the most frequently used commands. Office Excel 2007 has a similar set of tabs that make sense for spreadsheet work including tabs for working with formulas, managing data, and reviewing. These tabs simplify accessing application features because they organize the commands in a way that corresponds directly to the tasks people perform in these applications.

Why can't someone open a document that I sent them?

Office 2007 uses new file types. The file extensions that you are used to like .doc and .xls have changed for 2007 with an x usually being placed at the end (i.e. .docx). As Office 2007 is becomeing more common it will become rarer for compatibility issues to arise however you may need to save your file in Office 2003 format for someone that only has Office 2003 or earlier. To save documents in Office 2003 format click the Big Button and choose Save As and then Save as 2003 document.

How do I make Office 2003 the default saving option?

Click on the Office button in the top left corner
Click the Word Options radio button
Click the Save tab, and then change the drop-down menu for Save files in this format to be "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)"
Repeat same steps for Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

 Can I customise the ribbon?

There are 3rd party tools available for download that will allow some customisation. Office itself allow some minor tweaking. You can customise the quick access toolbar and this may be quite useful, especially when you're starting out with Office 2007. Click here for details.
